Estate and Elder Law Committee Update

Each year, the YLD’s Estate and Elder Law Committee, in partnership with local YLD affiliates and local bars, hosts Wills Clinics across the state to provide Georgia’s first responders and their spouses with basic estate planning documents on a pro bono basis. The Committee has hosted two Clinics during the 2016-2017 bar year, with the most recent Clinic occurring on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the Paulding Northwest Airport Conference Center in Paulding County. Volunteer attorneys served 28 local first responders and their spouses, bringing the total number of individuals served by all Wills Clinic to over 380 since the program’s inception in Fall 2014! The Committee thanks our local coordinator, Matthew Momtahan, Esq., of The Momtahan Law Firm – we could not have done it without you!
The Committee has two remaining Wills Clinics planned this bar year: Gwinnett County on Saturday, February 25, 2017 and Columbus, Georgia (Muscogee County) on Saturday, May 13, 2017. The Clinic in Columbus will be in partnership with the Alabama State Bar and their Wills for Heroes program, in order to adequately serve first responders in the intertwined metropolises of Columbus, Georgia and Phenix City, Alabama, and will coincide with the Columbus session of the 2017 YLD Leadership Academy, with the leadership class serving as attorney volunteers at the Clinic. To participate in a Wills Clinic, or to discuss hosting a Wills Clinic in your city, please contact Committee Co-Chairs Jennifer Thomas (jennifer@galaw.com) and Mandy Moyer (mandy@mandymoyer.com).

In addition to coordinating these Wills Clinics across the state, the Committee has also expanded its programming to offer networking opportunities to YLD members, hosting a lunch mixer for young and young at heart lawyers in connection with ICLE’s 62nd annual Estate Planning Seminar in Athens, Georgia. The mixer provided an opportunity for young estate planning attorneys to network and discuss the highlights of the Institute with more senior members of the profession. Another mixer is planned in conjunction with ICLE’s Fiduciary Law Institute in July in St. Simons Island.
