Nearly 50 Georgia YLD members and their families descended on Orlando, Florida over the weekend of November 3rd to attend the YLD Fall Meeting at Disney World. Anticipation was in the air for months as attendees looked forward to revisiting the magical memories of their childhood while other members hoped to create new memories on their first visits to Magic Kingdoms. The Georgia YLD has been blessed in recent years with members’ new children, and many attendees came with their whole families in tow – sons, daughters, and even grandparents! – as YLD President Jennifer Mock’s goal of focusing on families and children during her presidential term was certainly achieved at the Fall Meeting.
Upon arrival, guests checked in the conference hotel at Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club resort, modeled after a New England seaside town complete with boardwalk, lighthouse, and shipwreck in the swimming pool. YLD members enjoyed a Thursday evening welcome reception, including hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and great fall Florida weather, at the Yacht Club Marina directly on the boardwalk. Following the reception, a small group enjoyed a boat ride on the water and up close viewing of the fireworks show at Epcot.
Friday began with a breakfast buffet and CLE session organized by At-Large District Representative Ginger Arnold. Boca Raton attorney Brian Moskowitz encouraged all lawyers to strive for a work-life balance that would allow them to succeed professionally while also allowing them to lead healthy personal lives outside of practice. Following the CLE, Fall Meeting attendees were free to enjoy the Disney parks on their own schedules. Groups headed to the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios while others chose to travel offsite to enjoy Universal Studios and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Those visiting Epcot enjoyed the annual Epcot Food and Wine Festival.
Everyone reconvened Friday evening for a group dinner at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Prior to dinner, guests were treated to a twilight ride on Kilimanjaro Safaris where they observed lions, crocodiles, cheetahs, elephants and other native African animals in a simulated safari through the African savannah. Guests then climbed aboard the Wildlife Express Train which transported them to Conservation Station through the Animal Kingdom backlot. Dinner consisted of fried yardbird, shrimp and grits, and delicious desserts and concluded a surprise photo op with guests of honor Safari Mickey and Minnie Mouse!
The YLD General Session began early Saturday morning where YLD officers and members updated the group on executive, committee and affiliate happenings. President Jennifer Mock introduced and awarded the first YLD Stars of the Quarter to Lori Anderson, Sonia Lakhany, and Lakeisha Randall. Plans were also shared regarding the upcoming State Bar of Georgia Midyear Meeting in Atlanta and YLD Spring Meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. Following the meeting, most YLD members headed to enjoy one final day in the Magic Kingdom as the theme park was open for extended magic hours for resort guests. Saturday concluded with the beautiful fireworks show above Cinderella’s castle and Main Street USA and the premiere of Disney’s new castle projection show, “Once Upon A Time.” A wonderful time was had by all YLD members who were able to attend the November Fall Meeting.
The YLD thanks its generous sponsors for assisting with the YLD Fall Meeting including Collision Specialists, Inc., ESI, GTLA, GDLA, and LexHelper.
